Boehringer Ingelheim India has signed separate Memoranda of Understanding with the National Institutes of Pharmaceutical Education and Research (NIPER) at Ahmedabad and Hyderabad to strengthen pharmaceutical research, scientific collaboration and talent development across two of India’s leading life sciences hubs. The five-year agreements were signed during a joint ceremony in Hyderabad and establish a framework for collaborative research initiatives, academic exchange programmes and capability-building efforts aimed at advancing pharmaceutical innovation in India.
The signing ceremony was attended by senior academic and industry leaders, including Dr Shailendra Saraf, Director of NIPER Ahmedabad and Hyderabad, along with faculty members and researchers from both institutes. Under the partnership, researchers and faculty at the institutes will gain access to opnMe®, Boehringer Ingelheim’s global open science platform that provides scientists worldwide with free access to pre-clinical research compounds and collaborative research opportunities.
Through opnMe®, Indian researchers will be able to work with the same molecular tools used by scientists globally to support early-stage biological and pharmaceutical research. The initiative is expected to strengthen India’s transition toward innovation-led pharmaceutical discovery and translational research.
The collaborations are aligned with the Government of India’s Viksit Bharat 2047 vision and the Biopharma SHAKTI initiative announced in the Union Budget 2026–27. The national mission aims to strengthen India’s biopharmaceutical ecosystem through investment in translational research, talent development and expansion of pharmaceutical education infrastructure.
Gujarat and Hyderabad remain among India’s most significant pharmaceutical ecosystems. Gujarat contributes nearly one-third of the country’s pharmaceutical production and hosts a large concentration of USFDA-approved manufacturing facilities. Hyderabad, widely regarded as India’s bulk drug capital, is home to Genome Valley and several leading vaccine and biopharmaceutical companies.
The new partnerships build on earlier agreements signed by BoehringerIngelheim India with NIPER institutes in Raebareli and Hajipur earlier this year. With the latest collaborations, the company’s open science network now spans key pharmaceutical and research regions across northern, eastern, western and southern India.
Dr Saraf said India’s transformation into an innovation-led pharmaceutical economy will depend on stronger collaboration between academia and industry. He noted that the simultaneous partnerships with two major NIPER institutions reflect the pace and scale at which India’s pharmaceutical research ecosystem is evolving.
Meenal Gauri, Managing Director of Boehringer Ingelheim India, said opnMe® has evolved from a global scientific resource into a collaborative platform supporting India’s next generation of pharmaceutical researchers and institutions. She added that the partnerships represent a long-term commitment toward strengthening India’s research and education ecosystem.
Boehringer Ingelheim is a global biopharmaceutical company working in human and animal health, with research programmes focused on diseases with high unmet needs.
